Hula Girl

Hula Girl is set in the 1960’s in a fairly grim mining town in northeastern Japan. I get the impression that it is based on a true story but I can’t really confirm that. The story revolves around what the town plans to do as the mine is scheduled to be at least partially closed as coal is no longer in demand. It is decided that a Hawaiian Center will be opened taking advantage of the hot water that has plagued the mine with problems. Girls from mining families will be hired to be professional hula dancers, to that end a pro dancer with personal problems is brought in to instruct the girls. The hula girls face prejudice and ignorance from their own families and the other miners.

The screen caps below are from the early stages of the movie and no spoilers. You can download the movie at FS Seeders a bit torrent site that specializes in Asian movies and music but it is a member only site and you’d need to register to download stuff there, download the bit torrent file here. Get the DVD at Asian DVD Club the bit torrent can be downloaded here or finally you can direct download the avi file here. Lots of ways to get this excellent movie.
