Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When Cicadas Cry)

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is an anime I mentioned in the post on Akihabara Geeks, it was a murder mystery computer game adapted into a 26 episode series by Studio Deen in 2006. The basic story is that a new student, Maebara Keiichi comes to a small village Hinamizawa he quickly makes friends with some other students and joins their club playing games and enjoying the town with them. Then he learns that a horrible murder occurred five years ago on festival day and every year on that day someone in the town dies.

I've only watched the first two episodes of the show so far but find it quite good and plan on watching the entire series. The idyllic everyday school life contrasts well with the deepening mystery. I've never had the opportunity to play the video game but it looks really interesting. I don't know if it's ever been translated however.

The first DVD in the series is due to be released 2007-06-05, The sequel Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai is due to air on Japanese TV in 2007 July. The screen shots are from the fansub done by The Triad fansub group.

Watch the first 4 episodes and then....STOP!!! Do NOT watch anymore! You have seen the best this series has to offer.

Don't spoil it by wanting to find out anymore. The first four eps are the scariest, creepiest, and most suspenseful shows I've ever seen on television.

And then it's all downhill from there...

That's totally not true at all. Don't listen to redmaigo.
The more you watch, the more you understand. The goriest chapter isn't until much later, til the series is almost over.
And it's only 26 episodes long. If you can't sit through something this short (with an attention span of four episodes?? come on...) maybe you shouldn't be watching anything.
