Romeo and Juliet

O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Alive and doing very well in Japan, last fall this drama special aired as part of a Shakespeare festival along with King Lear. Now in the spring anime season Gonzo has re-imagined the play for anime, complete with flying horses. Fansubs have just been released for the drama and I had a chance to watch it last night.
The story has been updated and changed around, we see the end at the beginning and the setting is modern day Tokyo. Romeo, actually Hiromichi is played by Takizawa Hideaki (Strawberry on the Shortcake). He’s the son of a suspected murderer who’s on the run, with a hospitalized mother who’s seriously ill. He's forced to quit high school to support his mother and works as a recycler. Juliet or Juri is played by Nagasawa Masami (Proposal Daisakusen, Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu, Nada So So). She's a university student who’s father is the police inspector in charge of capturing Hiromichi’s father.
I really enjoyed this drama special it’s a unique twist on the play and the lead actors are very good in their roles. I’ve liked Hideaki ever since I saw him as the lead in Strawberry on the Shortcake, he’s matured as an actor since then and is really good as the son who’s family has relied too heavily upon. Nagasawa Masami has had a really busy year, movies, a fall series, this special and my favorite spring 07 drama Proposal Daisakusen. She’s very believable as the modern woman who disbelieves in love at first sight, and then goes ahead and does it.
