Slipped To the Depths of Depravity
I have slipped to the depths of depravity this summer/fall driven there by a relentless desire to read manga. In July a friend recommend a title to me because he knows I enjoy romantic comedies “Iono the Fanatics”. I picked it up on his recommendation alone not even glancing at the back cover until I’m in the line at Borders where I find out that’s it’s a yuri title. I’m not homophobic so I bought it and liked it a lot, it’s smart and funny, has tons of cute characters with a sweet story underlying the whole first volume. So I had read my first yuri title.
Once upon a time, there was a ruler of a small Kingdom who was burdened with the task of running the Kingdom at an early age. This ruler was the ideal monarch who was a natural leader. This ruler’s only fault, if you can call it that, was a fetish for women with long straight luscious black hair. Now imagine that the setting is the present, and that this ruler was a young beautiful Queen. Welcome to the party, you have just entered the world of Iono-sama Fanatics! Come and lose yourself in a world of dazzling women as a Queen sets out to add gorgeous Japanese women with long straight black hair to her collection of lady escorts~! With guns, swords, cars, politics, beauty pageants, and exotic women, there’s no way you can lose! description from the publishers website
Then last week my first volume of Antique arrived, I ordered it online after I finished watching the Antique drama last week. I really loved the show and while the title was listed as shounen ai or “Boys Love” ****Antique drama series spoiler****, I knew none of the characters were gay. Well I was pretty surprised to read the first chapter of the manga, when in a high school flashback Ono confesses to Tachibana and gets cruelly rejected. The rest of the volume tells the story pretty closely as it’s presented in the drama series.
A high school crush; a world-class pastry chef; a former middle-weight boxing champion...and a whole lot of cake!
Ono has come a long way since the agonizing day in high school when he confessed his love to handsome Tachibana. Now, some 14 years later Ono, a world-class pastry chef and gay playboy has it all. No man can resist Ono's charms (or his cooking skills!) but he has just found a new position under a man named Tachibana. Can this be the only man who resisted his charms, and if so, will the man who once snubbed the "magically gay" Ono get his just desserts? And how in the heck did a former middleweight boxing champion wind up as Ono's cake boy? description from the publishers website
I really recommend this manga if you enjoyed the drama because the subs were pretty bad in the drama release and the story makes a lot more sense in the well written manga. Both covers are scans from the Japanese releases.
Antique is written by Yoshmaga Fumi, it’s four volumes long first published in 1999 and completed in 2002, the English release is by Digital Manga Publishing. Iono the Fanatics is written and drawn by Fujieda Miyabi two volumes have been released, the first in 2005 and the series is presently ongoing. The English releases are published by Infinity Studios. Both of these manga are highly recommended to anyone who enjoys slice of life comedies or romantic comedies like Love Com or Nodame Cantabile. But I swear I draw the line at yaoi!!!
