Azumanga Daioh Screen Caps

This is one of the best slice of life anime comedies I’ve ever seen. The reason that it’s so good is its exceptional cast of characters starting with the 10 year old genius Mihama Chiyo who’s skipped five grades, starting in first year high school. Takino Tomo is an off the wall teenager who’s extremely competitive but also a complete slacker. Mizuhara Koyomi is Tomo close friend and classmate but her complete opposite, when Tomo gets too crazy it’s Koyomi who brings her reins her in and brings her back to Earth. Osaka is actually Kasuga Ayumu but the dreamy transfer student from Osaka is nicknamed Osaka by Tomo on her first day in class. Sakaki is the admired classmate who’s tall, pretty and good in sports but also extremely shy and devoted to cute animals at first her shyness is interpreted as aloofness by the others. This is the main group of students featured early on in the manga and anime. Their homeroom teacher throughout the entire three years is English teacher Tanizaki Yukari but her students call her Yukari-sensei, she is often as crazy as Tomo and the teacher that keeps her in check is Minamo Kurosawa who Yukari refers to by her nickname Nyamo even in front of the students. Nyamo and Yukari are long time friends and in many ways their relationship closely resembles the dynamic that Tomo and Koyomi have. The anime opens as Yukari late for work has problems with her bike, a student stops to help and instead of thanking him she steals his bike and pedals like mad for school so she won’t be late.

The anime covers the entire three years that the girls spend together with cultural and sports festivals occurring each year, class trips especially summer trips to Chiyo beach house are always funny due to Yukari’s unique driving. I usually prefer the manga to the anime but in this case I can say that it’s reversed while I liked the four manga a lot, it just didn’t have as much continuity as the anime provided to the storyline. Actually I would highly recommend both to anyone who enjoys slice of life shows like Lucky Star or Minami-ke . It's licensed by ADV Films but you can rent the series at Netflix if you like to give it a try.

@p-chan It's such a great show, always good for a smile. I often throw a DVD in to re-watch it. Kimura just makes me laugh and laugh when he pops up to see the girls.
