Sketchbook ~full color'S~スケッチブック

Page 1 The Girl With a Sketchbook
A young girl runs around town taking pictures mainly of the many stray cats, Sora the heroine of the anime sits in an empty lot sketching a cat that isn’t cooperating with the pose that Sora wants to draw. The cat has slept and scratched and cleaned but hasn’t resumed the pose that Sora started sketching. The picture taking girl runs into the lot and begins talking to Sora who is so lost in her drawing that she doesn’t even appear to hear the girl. Finally Sora looks at the girl who just keeps on talking as the shy and silent Sora looks on. The girl runs off with a parting “Onee-san let me see what you’re drawing next time”. Then Sora walks around town and talks a little about herself and her love of drawing and how she uses her sketchbook as a camera. Next the scene switches to the school art room where you’re given a brief introduction to the some of the students and the art teacher Kasugano who has a pet chicken named P-chan. Sora has decided to check out the clubs that the school offers eventually she decides to observe the Fine Arts Club.

The anime is based on a yonkoma by mangaka Totan Kobako four volumes have been published in Japan; I’ll post the scanlated first chapter in a few days. The anime is about as exciting as watching paint dry and I look forward to watching it very much each week, which seems like a contradiction but if you try it I think you’ll feel the same way. It centers on the art club and almost exclusively on Sora who dreamily wanders through life often so intent on her own musings that she completely misses the other people around her as they try to interact with her. Also because of her extreme shyness she has trouble talking to people when she first meets them. She reminds me of an extremely shy version of Osaka from Azumanga Daioh. It’s a very quiet slice of life school comedy and I would recommend you check it out if you enjoy Hidamari Sketch or Honey and Clover or other gentle slice of life comedies.
