It’s an awful looking hallway that the familiar jersey suited teacher is walking down, the other teachers wonder if it’ll be OK going into class 3-D alone, but they acknowledge that the teacher has been successful at two prior schools getting delinquents to graduate. Finally the camara reveals the face of Sawatari Goro played by Namase Katsuhisa (Gokusen 1 & 2
, 4 Shimai Tantei Dan) as he announces to 3-D that he’ll be the new Head Teacher and also their homeroom teacher. He gives a Yamaguchi inspired speech before they toss him out into the hallway on his head. In the teachers room the Board Chairman, Akagi Ryouko played by Enami Kyoko (Hitonatsu no Papa e, Love Complex) tells him that teachers who aren’t useful are fired. Sawatari promises her that he’ll bring in a teacher that will be able to control 3-D. The scene changes to a southern island Yamaguchi Kumiko played by Nakama Yukie (Gokusen
, Itazura na Kiss
) is standing on a boulder giving one of her signature speeches, when the camera reveals a group of international students who didn’t understand a word of the Japanese speech she’s just given. The principal arrives and tells Kumiko he doesn’t want her to teach the students weird Japanese, and Kumiko wonders why the students only remember the yakuza terms she’s used by mistake. Then the principal fires her.
Not much has changed in the drama’s formula except for the school, her fellow teachers and students but the same plots that kept me laughing in Gokusen 1 & 2 kept me entertained in this opening episode. I guess the question is will the actor’s playing the students, be able to match the performances of their counterparts in 1& 2, it’ll take a few episodes to find that out. Two of the class leaders are Miura Haruma (Unfair, Binbo Danshi) as Kazama Ren and Takaki Yuya (Shabake) as Ogata Yamato there performances will be key as to how well this sequel stands up to it’s predecessors. I liked the opening where Sawatari surprises the viewer who’s expecting Kumiko to be the homeroom teacher; also the scene where Kumiko is giving her opening speech is right from the previous Gokusen opening where she gives her speech to the pre-k kids. I’d recommend this to fans of the previous Gokusen
dramas who want more of the same or school drama fans who like the emphasis on comedy like My Boss My Hero
